Video duration: 39 seconds

This is a triple expansion engine that pumped London's water for over 50 years (and is still in excellent working order!) It's run once a month at the Kempton works where you can see (and hear) it in operation.

Video duration: 48 seconds

My Dublo 'Bristol Castle' and my Stanier 8F heavy freight working together on my layout. Both locomotives are the earlier non ring-field motor version, now that the more powerful magnets are available this, in my view, works perfectly adequately. You can see photos of my Hornby-Dublo trains on

Oxford Ambience, midday chimes in Christchurch Meadows Oxford Ambience, midday chimes in Christchurch Meadows

Video duration: 102 seconds

One of the sounds of Oxford is the bells of Magdalen, Merton, and Christchurch Colleges chiming across Christchurch Meadow. I have captured this on my Fuji, it's a bit difficult as you don't get to do a dry run! There is some wind blow unfortunately.

Video duration: 60 seconds

This is a view of the valve gear that controls the engine's operation. The various levers control the admission of steam, its path through the engine, and the opening of the condenser valve.
Sorry about the wobbly bit, there was a crowd and people were squeezing past!

This is the Hornby-Dublo tank engine hauling a lengthy train of Trix Private Owner Wagons. I've gone in a bit closer here so something of the detail of the Trix wagons can be seen; more of the train itself can be seen in my other video of the R1

Hornby-Dublo N2 tank locomotive on oil freight train Hornby-Dublo N2 tank locomotive on oil freight train
Posted by: JimTLonW6

Video duration: 11 seconds

This is part of my collection of vintage Hornb-Dublo model trains made by Meccano Ltd. The N2 locomotive is one of the oldest in the range, originally introduced in 1938. It's based on the LNER N2, though it isn't a particularly good model honestly! However, it's very serviceable, will haul a long train and is very reliable.

Hornby-Dublo Silver King and Bristol Castle Hornby-Dublo Silver King and Bristol Castle
Posted by: JimTLonW6

Video duration: 31 seconds

'Silver King' replaced the original 'Sir Nigel Gresley' in the 1950's and continued until 1959 or 1960. It's hauling the short-lived LNER coaches which had printed window representations rather than perspex. It's a serviceable locomotive, very reliable, but lacks the detailed valve gear of some of the other Dublo engines.

This tugboat is over 100 years old, and had a long working life with the Avonmouth Docks. It is now preserved at the Bristol Floating Harbour, but is steamed once a month. This is the engine, still going strong!

Video duration: 23 seconds

This small beam engine was discovered in a room that hadn't been opened since the 1920's! It's not known who supplied it or why it went out of use, but it's back in working order and is steamed at weekends in summer.

New Zealand Thunder New Zealand Thunder

Video duration: 38 seconds

This is a video from the Routeburn walk in NZ, as you can see it rained, a lot! It also thundered, and I was recording the rain when there was a lighting flash, so I kept recording, and here, on video, for your enjoyment, is a genuine Kiwi thunderclap!

Small scale petrol engine Combe Oxfordshire UK Small scale petrol engine Combe Oxfordshire UK
Posted by: JimTLonW6

Video duration: 12 seconds

This is a small petrol engine of a type that was, briefly, very popular. The way that it works isn't obvious, there is a power stroke only if the RPM has fallen below a certain level, there seems to be a centrifugal link which, when it engages, fires the cylinder, hence the rather odd sound of the engine.

Crofton Engines Valves Crofton Engines Valves
Posted by: JimTLonW6

Video duration: 8 seconds

These valves control the progress of steam through the engine. Steam under pressure pushes the piston down, but it then enters the underside of the piston and is condensed, the vacuum that results increases the amount of work that can be extracted from the steam.
